Let's get theoretical for a sec. How do you feel about pairs of opposites (dyads) vs. triads?
Dyads are easier to conceptualize, but binary systems based on polarity wind up feeling flat and lifeless to me somehow (no disrespect to the I Ching).
I'd favor a system based on triads where one element in each is primary, the source of the other two. Think of matter and antimatter arising from aether. This is observably how physical reality works. Describing matter and antimatter doesn't mean much without a concept to unite the opposites.
The concept of binary "significant features" played a big role in my linguistics education. For example, a speech sound can either be voiced (like /z/) or voiceless (like /s/). But there are many cases where context doesn't require that either value be specified, so a third option is needed.
