My talk at the #joyofcoding conference the other day is now on YouTube. "Accidental world domination for fun"
Showing up at a conference as a #curl maintainer may cause a lot of positive feedback and sentiments getting expressed. Just saying. Can even become almost overwhelming!
This will keep me going for another while for sure. Thanks everyone at #joyofcoding.
@joyofcoding And #JoyOfCoding closes out with a presentation about "Saving the world by writing more efficient code"
@joyofcoding Second to last, some tips on "Decarbonizing your code". #JoyOfCoding
@joyofcoding Then some tips for creating and handling code reviews. #JoyOfCoding
@joyofcoding Followed by a showcase of ways to turn IntelliJ into a game engine / platform. Just because we can!? #JoyOfCoding
@joyofcoding After lunch #JoyOfCoding continued with *eight* lightning talks
.
@joyofcoding Before lunch we had some Demoscene insights and... Demo's!! #JoyOfCoding
@joyofcoding After a short break an excellent talk about mental health, truly great and much needed #JoyOfCoding
(My timelapse from earlier in this thread was for these sketch notes.)
@joyofcoding Followed by the author of curl ("accidental world domination" ). #JoyOfCoding
Okay, here's my promised crosspost of @joyofcoding / #JoyOfCoding 2025 sketch notes on Mastodon! Some spam forthcoming....
In the mean time, here's some insight into how I create my sketch notes with a timelapse! #JoyOfCoding
Great talk at #joyofcoding by @bagder on being a long term OSS maintainer
At @joyofcoding's #JoyOfCoding 2025 conference today! Will crosspost my sketch notes as a thread here on Mastodon afterwards, for a more live set of updates check out: https://bsky.app/profile/jeroenheijmans.nl/post/3lsl4eojynk2v
Great talk by Hannes Mühleisen of #DuckDB about tables being a fundamental technology to civilization and not dismissing databases, SQL & ACID just because some implementation are getting old in the tooth.
DuckDB sounds awesome and I know @bert_hubert is a big fan.
Now image the situation where the popularity of the #FOSS project grew unnoticed, and the expectation of "hobby project" was never well conveyed.
Even the maintainer at this point considers the project "more than hobby". They want to keep working in the way that motivated them to start, despite people demanding differently. They still want #JoyOfCoding and to build what they want, thus decide to retain full control of contributions.
The label #BDFL is slammed broadly about in harsh criticism.
Refactoring code was the topic of 2 talks yesterday at #joyofcoding
I put on my nihilist hat and wrote down why I think it's not going to happen as the default way of doing things, ever.
As humans, we have proven over and over again that we suck at taking care of existing things
*gestures at the state of the earth*
Thanks #JoyOfCoding for having me talk about building in accessibility!
