Tutsan ( a relative of St John's wort) is a popular garden shrub around here. It has indifferent yellow flowers in spring, followed by coral colored berries which glow against its dark green leaves. Its autumn colors can be spectacular.

Coral colored tutsan berries, with their round shape against the oval opposite dark green leaves, look like a scattering of beads in a flower border. Here it's paired with pale green Autumn Joy serum. Later this summer and fall the combo will be lovely with shades of russet, red and gold.

A coral and yellow begonia flower leans over the edge of a terra cottage flower pot. The pot is sitting on a gray painted wall corner below a porch. There are a few light green fern leaves casting shadows on the wall, both below and behind the flower pot. The whole scene is in dappled shade, and is coolly colorful.

A few small clusters of creamy white hydrangea flowers are set off by the dark green leaves. The largest cluster on the right is shading into almost all pastel pink, the one is the center is still white, and the one on the upper left is barely showing any pink. The whole image is processed to look like a silk drawing.

Late summer flowers in Maple Leaf Park prairie restoration

Bright goldenrod (Solidago lepida) has feathery panicles of small yellow daisy-like flowers on curved branches. The leaves are long, lanceolate and crowded on the flowering stem below the panicle. This goldenrod is a lovely sight in late summer amid the dry tan grasses.

Fireweed (Chamaenerion angustifolium) has tall spires of leafy stems topped by pink to purple flowers. Each flower contains 4 sepals, 4 petals, and 8 cream colored stamens, and a cute white pistil with four curlicues at the end. The leaves are long, lanceolate and rough textured. Large clumps of fireweed can give the effect of a purple haze in grassy prairies such as this one in Maple Leaf Park.

Another late summer flower in the grassy prairie in Maple Leaf Park, purple Douglas aster (Symphyotrichum subspicatum) is tall, full of long leaves and covered with lavender daisy-like flowers. The external petal flowers are lavender. The flowers in the heart start out red and turn into little gold star shaped cups as they open, The buds scattered throughout the shrubby plants open over several weeks.

Datura bud and blossom. The flower opens overnight and dies by early afternoon. It smells like dime store perfume.

A datura flower the evening before it opens. It looks like a loosely rolled white paper turning lavender at the outer edges. Each of the five fused petals looks like it has a finger pointing outwards from the tip, a swirl of folds. The trumpet shaped bud has green veins running from top to bottom, where it is encased in a light green calyx. The dark green, rough leaves are coarsely dentate..

A datura flower early in the morning after it opened overnight: the white trumpet shaped flower points up and then flares and folds downward at the outside edge. The white in the fused petals shades to vivid lavender at the outside edges. There is a long finger like projection at the 5 petal points, which look a bit like bat fingers at the end of a bat wing. The stamens can be seen inside the flower, along with a long white pistil. The lighting is from an early morning sun.

A really tall cedar tree has a trunk split into 5 just above ground level. You can't see the tree top, but the trunks are rough, red and gray. They're close enough together You can barely see the house behind them through the trunks. The lawn in front of the house is spacious and bordered with graceful evergreen and birch trees. The early morning light is dappled with shade on the sidewalk under the cedar.

There is a relatively large roundabout on top of a hill where 3 streets meet in Ravenna Neighborhood. Inside, it hides a miniature park, with benches, a Little Free Library, and mostly native plant landscaping. A little free photo bombing by Monty.

A roundabout at the joining of 3 streets in the neighborhood is covered with shrubs and trees. But you can see there is a path going into the foliage. The roundabout is in a residential neighborhood, and you can see houses off to the right side of the photo.

Going on the path into the foliage, you can see there is a clearing with trails going off in 3 directions. At the center of the trails' meeting, there are benches and a rustic little free library. The benches are backed by low growing shrubs and ferns. There is a lot of shade and dappled sunlight.

There is a sign about this mini park set at the edge of a path among the ferns: The "CirclePark" represents the hear of the Ravenna-Cowwn Historic District, an area of historic homes placed in the National Register of Historic Places on September 13, 2018. Neighborhood volunteers created and continue to maintain the native plant landscape you see around you. We hope you enjoy Circle Park and the rest of this wonderful Seattle neighborhood as much as we do.

A lot of salal bushes are in the parks landscaping. Here you can see a cluster of salal berries hanging off their green leafy bushes in the sun. The berries are nice and ripe, blue black on reddish stems with red bracts contrasting with the berries.

When I was a child, my sisters and I would cut the hollyhock flowers in our Mimi's garden and make dolls, with flowery skirts, green bud heads and toothpick arms.

A deep red hollyhock flowers blooms at the bottom of a stem full of buds. The petals are ruffled and streaked with lighter red veins that turn cream as they reach the creamy white base of the petals. The pistil and fused stamens are also cream colored, as is the pollen scattered across the petals. The buds above the blossom are light green with fuzzy sepals. The hollyhock leaves are large, palmate, and prickly. The hollyhock is growing next to a weathered wooden fence.

A cluster of pale apricot colored trumpet vine flower buds are slowly opening. Two are fully opened, showing the five overlapping petals at the top of a long tube shape. The one on the lower left has an earwig sleeping inside. The flowers contrast nicely with the pinnate dark green leaves. The closed buds are long and slightly green, with a star shape outlining the petals at the top. It's interesting that the pistil and anthers are so closely held against the top to the trumpet, showing the flowers have evolved to allow hummingbirds and insects to forage deeply, catching pollen on their heads and bodies.

The inflated seed pods of love-in-the-mist look like hot air balloons surrounded by green netting. The pods are green with maroon stripes running from top to bottom. The top of the pods are flattened, star shaped, with long wavy "arms" coming out from the points of the stars, reminding me of starfish and their tentacles. There are myriad water drops over everything because of recent sprinkling.

Beautiful cabbage

Looking down into a purple cabbage in a garden plot: the large rounded leaves form a spiral, going from the outside's velvety green with purple overtones and red veins, to darker purple as you approach the deep purple heart. The leaves are spread out at the outside, and more tightly furled as they grow near the heart, where the bud that will be the harvested cabbage hides, protected by the curled leaves. A few water drops cling here and there, remains from when an early morning gardener watered the plot before the heat of the day.

A trumpet shaped large white bindweed flower glows in the lower left corner of the image as it grows against a dark fence. The flower is at the bottom of a vine with deeply shaded triangular green leaves that can be seen winding up to the right. Two unopened flower buds, furled tightly like greenish umbrellas emerging from a green calyx, are poking out from the leaves.

Spent some time this morning working in the P-Patch Children's Garden.

Children's Garden plant beds have a lot of variation . On the left, a couple of kids decided to make an all marigold bed, full of yellow, orange and red marigollds. A bright blue metal headboard sits at the end of the bed(!). The next bed is split in two. At the top, the sister decided to make a veggie bed with peas, swiss chard (one of which has bolted ) and lettuce. The brother decided to do a bunny garden with begonias, nasturtiums and marigolds, to enchant the bunnies, I guess. In the bacground you can see other beds full of green stuff, the grape arbor entrance on the left, and the buildings of the school that borders one end.

The Children's Garden has a sunflower hut, with the sunflower walls growing. The walls are mostlybunder 2 feet right now. The hut is 8sided, and uses an old patio umbrella frame as a roof, to hold up the wooden poles that will be used to tether the sunflowers when they get bigger. There are various brightly colored child sized garden implements scattered about. Once again, the other beds are full of green growth, and the school walls full of classroom windows look down on the plots. This is a high school. I wonder what the students think of when the kids are put there working? Or maybe they're office windows?

The Children's Garden is growing its yearly scarlet runner bean teepee. You can see that the beans are making good progress, about halfway up the poles. There are red flowers growing among the green vines. This year they needed to put a chicken wire fence around the teepee because the
rabbits were eating the bean shoots!

Red osier dogwood (Cornus sericea) grows abundantly in the PNW. Its masses of cymes of small white four-petaled flowers are decorative from spring through summer.
I see it is now called Cornus stolonifera. Such is life.

Three cymes of red osier dogwood flowers cross this image diagonally. You can see the cymes are composed of numerous small 4 petaled white flowers. The leaves beneath and around the cymes are broadly oval. The venation is typical of dogwoods, curving from a large central vein upward to the edge of the leaves.

Some more pretty blueberries are ripening. I thought they might be Pink Popcorn cultivars, but they just want some fertilizer. They are still tasty when ripe

Some ripening blueberries at the top of a stem vary in color from lime green, to pink and red, to dark purple. The darkest colors are at the flower scars, with fancy ridges circling the scar. They might be great Christmas baubles! The bush leaves are also tinged in red at the edges.

A little hosta in a pot giving its all

A small green leafed hosta is thriving in a turquoise pot. Summer has induced it to give us two stems of lavender trumpet-shaped blossoms. The pistils and stamens are elegantly curved outwards, and the anthers are ripening with golden pollen. Each blossom's six lightly striped petals are also bending outward. There are several flower buds waiting their turn to bloom. The pot is set among other, varied hosta leaves and lacy leaves of dicentra, which, amazingly, is still in flower, giving splashes of pink in the background.

Morning at the P-Patch, before a hot day

A photo of the community garden in the early morning, in dappled sunlight, before the heat starts. From my POV, you can see, on the left, my wooden 4ft by 8ft box with vegetables growing well. Next to it is a chair with my gray shih tzu, Monty, underneath enjoying the shade. Beyond my box you can see several other elevated beds, and off to the left in tha background is our red Sharing Shed, with bright blue bee hive boxes on its roof. The boxes are almost the same color as the sky. At the edge you see the fences of the houses bordering the patch, with purple plum trees providing shade.

Thin leaf huckleberry (Vaccinium membranaceum) bushes don't produce heavily but the berries are fine. I like the concavity in the berries which looks like it is stitched. They like the mountains, but this one in our garden seems to be thriving.

A couple of dark blue huckleberries sit above abundant thin, oval, bright green leaves. The berries are small, a bit shiny, and have a concave flower scar. You can spot a few more berries hiding in the background.

Hosta blooming

A spike of white hosta flowers open gradually against blue-green ridged leaves. The open, trumpet-shaped flowers have a long white pistil and anthers full of yellow pollen peeking out from between the petals. The unopened buds are sleek and greenish white. The blue- green leaves bend around the flowers, creating interesting wavy shapes.

A corymb of white papery flowers is the focus of this photo. The flowers look like small ruffled balls sitting atop a slightly fuzzy blue-green stem. The darker blue-green leaves are narrow, about 2 to 5 inches long, and covered with white hairs. You can see golden brown grasses with more pearly everlasting plants scattered about in the background.
