I can tell it's spring because the Unequal Cellophane Bees (Colletes inaequalis) are out and about in my neighbor's yard! Please enjoy this bee investigating a crocus. (Sadly these flowers are introduced and may not help this native bee, but this bee is determined to find out.)
If you're wondering why they're "Unequal", inaequalis in Latin apparently also means "impermanent"; they only emerge briefly.

We’re hoping these violas will fill out to spill over the edges of the planters like they did the first time we did this a few years ago (last pic!)
We tried other plants in since then but none were as impressive and didn’t stand up to the weird English weather the way these do.
Flower no 1
My orchid did me the honour of growing a flowering stem with eight buds this winter. First one finally opened today.
Looking at gems in the garden centre. I made paper violas for my wedding and I based the colouration of one set on the first ones. They always make me happy when I see them
