That sound's really interesting. I've been mulling over the question of how thinking on self-sufficiency might have changed since the days of John Seymour et al.

I'm only guessing really, but on the food side I think permaculture ('revolution disguised as organic gardening') will have advanced. But surely the biggest recent developments will have been not in growing, but in energy generation ?

I can't answer that - my knowledge of self-sufficency is really based on the work of John Seymour etc so is a bit last-century - though my son seems to be developing a passion in that way - we're encouraging him to get into 'wwoofing' for broad experience - wwoof.net/

Perhaps there's a working mastodon hashtag for info here - #selfsufficiency

#BangorME - Limited space can’t stop Bangor’s #UrbanGardeners from growing their own food

Avatar photo by Elizabeth Walztoni July 29, 2025

"Bangor may not seem like a place to grow a '#FoodParadise,'but Travis Gagnon’s experience proves otherwise.

"He’s interested in #SelfSufficiency, and limited space at his apartment hasn’t stopped him from raising an explosion of crops along the walkway to his ground floor apartment, from #watermelons to #wheat. Gagnon isn’t alone; many people in Bangor and #BrewerME are producing food and supporting #pollinators in small spaces.

"Though city growing presents some unique obstacles — such as soil that may be poor, limited light and small yards — Bangor-area growers are overcoming them and even finding things they prefer about growing in an urban environment.

"Twelve such gardeners are opening their yards to the public and will be on hand to answer questions on Saturday, Aug. 2 for an annual urban garden tour organized by #FoodAndMedicine, a Brewer-based organization working to address the root causes of poverty.

"The tour aims to show how anyone can start growing their own food no matter where they live, according to organizers.

"The Bangor Daily News asked participating gardeners how they grow in the city, what they’ve learned and what they enjoy."

Added two more panels to the temporary* secondary solar array to help us get through midwinter. 2kW total, these are only 250W panels. You can get these for pocket money, nobody wants the small output panels.

*This temporary array was built 3 or 4 years ago.... It's real basic trestles made of rough 4x2 wood.

Does anyone know of a handy list of good books around topics like how to do things without electricity/gas/etc? I'm finding it difficult to explain what I mean, but in a solarpunk/sufficient/'the world is crap and too expensive but I still want to have a thing' sort of way.

Like knitting, weaving, gardening, building, etc. I'd like to build a library of physical resources/books for knowledge to have on hand if the world goes to crap. But not in a 'prepper' way.

I guess it can rely on electricity, but derived from solar or hydro rather than from a grid. And maybe then stuff about that would be good like how to fix a generator or something.

I'm sorry this is rambley, hopefully it makes sense to someone. I'm not even sure what tags to give this.
