Um, since cavities haven't been a problem for me (I've had just one), I think I'll switch back to using baking soda and peroxide again (with my own dried mint if I want mintiness).

Some Tom's of Maine toothpaste may be contaminated with #HarmfulBacteria, FDA says

#FDA's warning about multiple types of bacteria and "a black mold-like substance" found in a facility that makes #TomsOfMaine toothpaste has consumers worried about a possible recall.

November 20, 2024

"A recent inspection of a Tom's of Maine facility found 'significant violations' that included different types of bacteria detected in the water and the company's toothpaste, as well as a '#BlackMold-like substance' located behind a water storage tank, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

"The FDA determined the company's response to its findings was 'inadequate' and called for a 'thorough review of all #microbiological hazards,' according to a letter sent by the agency to the brand's parent company, Colgate-Palmolive.

"An inspection in May of a facility in #SanfordMaine, discovered the bacteria #PseudomonasAeruginosa in #water used to manufacture Tom’s Simply White Clean Mint Paste and to clean equipment. The bacteria can cause infections in the blood, lungs and urinary tract, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"The letter also stated that there were multiple incidents of finding a bacteria called #RalstoniaInsidiosa in water in the facility. A third type of bacteria, #ParacoccusYeei, was found in the finished product of the company's Wicked Cool! Anticavity Toothpaste, per the FDA. The type of Paracoccus yeei found can cause infection that may be resistant to #antibiotics.

"An FDA inspector also found 'a black mold-like substance' at the base of a hose reel behind a water storage tank within one foot of stainless-steel pails used to manufacture the toothpaste, according to the letter. 'Powder residues' were also seen in a stainless-steel tray next to a batch of #TomsSillyStrawberryAnticavity toothpaste.

"The company told the FDA that the room was thoroughly cleaned to remove the black substance and the powder residue, but the FDA called for more to be done."

TODAY · Tom's of Maine Toothpaste Possibly Made with Harmful Bacteria, FDA saysPar Scott Stump

The simple act of buying a tube of #toothpaste has turned into a chore.

I like #TomsOfMaine with floride and peppermint oil, which I think started as an early variety, perhaps their first.

Trader Joe's carried it for a while, then replaced it with a store brand knockoff, which I like less.

I dislike shopping at #Safeway (which also owns Lucky) for many reasons, including that it's run buy monopolistic religious zealots who have shown some willingness to rip off their customers.

The big drug store chains with local stores offer an "incentive" to get me to join and use their purchase-tracking programs by offering a lower price if I do, and jacking up the prices otherwise. What they don't seem to realize is that my "next best alternative" to joining their programs isn't paying their higher prices, it's buying what I want through Amazon and saving myself the hell of having to visit their stores at all.

@fourmiune Oh, and of course, radium water before that. The health benefits are just as flawed as the #radiation #hormesis theory!

"In 1898, Marie and Pierre Curie made a huge discovery. While studying uraninte, a radioactive mineral high in uranium and ore, they managed to separate out several components. They eventually isolated radium itself and announced the find to the world. The scientific community was elated. This strange element didn’t follow the laws of physics. People immediately hoped to find a medicinal purpose for radium. An experiment in 1911 on horses raised the possibility that radium had anti-aging properties. In 1913, newspaper announced the creation of 'radium water,' which was brewed by pouring water into a container with radium.

"Once this water was released to the public, it took off. RadiThor was especially popular in the 1920’s, when people could buy a 1-ounce bottle for $1. Now, that’s over $15, but customers were eager to reap the proclaimed health benefits. Doctors started prescribing it for everything from high blood pressure to arthritis to sexual impotence. It remained popular for years and radium started appearing in other products. You could even find #toothpaste made from #radium and #thorium. The creator reasoned that since radium glowed in the dark, it could make one’s teeth shine, too. The element even ended up in #chocolate and #bread. Why were people so happy to ingest something we know now is so toxic?

"For one thing, people weren’t totally ignorant about radium’s dangers. In plants where the substance was handled, workers knew to wear lead aprons and other safety equipment, but that was pure radium. The amount of radium in products like Radium Water was very small. Also, when ingested, radium can initially cause the appearance of better health thanks to its stimulation of red blood cells. However, as people would soon realize, even a teeny-tiny amount of radium could do incredible damage over time..."

Gildshire Magazines · People In The 1920’s Drank Water With Radium; It Didn’t End WellWhen a radioactive spider bit Peter Parker, the teenager gains superpowers. In reality, however, radium is an extremely toxic element. If Peter were to get radium inside his body, it would rot his skeleton from the inside out. Back in the early 20th century, most people didn’t know this.

I started a new tube of toothpaste last night. I've never actually paid attention to how long a single tube lasts before. My wife and I use different kinds so it's just me using it, and at the end of a tube I can never remember when I had started it.

This time, I'm documenting the start of this tube so I'll be able to look back and verify when it was.
