You are absolutely right; the incentives of grades are so, so broken.
I'm actually pro grade inflation. Inflate away this terrible metric so teachers and students can put more focus on learning the skills that society values.

It's easy to tell which students have watched my ungrading video and which students have not. The ones who ask me why I have not graded their work fall into the latter. I have not graded for 2 years at the college level, have iterated an ungrading approach with a collective that regularly meets monthly, we have been meeting for 2+ years. Unfortunately most are still on the bird app.
Would be nice to develop a #ungrading community here.
I dreamt I taught a class called “Historicizing Grades.” Topics included the arbitrariness of signs, vowels vs. consonants, the “A Minus” as an oxymoron, and thinking outside the English alphabet. Final project: We worked together to transform a manicured lawn into a wild meadow

It's important to note that "ungrading" is a broad umbrella term. It manifests in a wide variety of forms. I'm not familiar with the specific nature of and constraints on teaching at an institute. If you can fill me in a bit, I'll try to be helpful.

@lewriley can you tell me more about #ungrading? How do you do this in the context of teaching at an institute exactly? Any sources you can point me towards?

I should have also said that I appreciate the idea of "good faith effort" because of the different circumstances and backgrounds students have, and realities they have to deal with, so that what a good faith effort looks like for one person may look different for another.

I have really taken up a term that a student shared last semester as it relates to framing ungrading.
A frequent challenge and question is what is good enough from a student work perspective?
The student shared that he consistently focused on giving a "good faith effort" which is interesting in that students often share that they could have done more, and feel they could have done more (can't we all say that about anything?)
I really like the personal and collective accountability that comes with looking at, and thinking about "good faith effort."
I am completely and totally, 100% in the "intrinsic motivation" camp. I really am, but also this.

@AmyPetty Concerned, yes. But I think we can create assignments that are "AI proof." I may be kidding myself. But I think things such as #ungrading could come into play.
