Resolving a Candidate Dual #ActiveGalacticNucleus with ∼100 pc Separation in MCG-03-34-64: iopscience.iop.org/article/10. -> NASA’s Hubble, #Chandra Find Supermassive #BlackHole Duo: science.nasa.gov/missions/hubb -> Bright lights detected by NASA telescopes lead to a dancing pair of supermassive black holes: edition.cnn.com/2024/09/10/sci

Cassiopeia A, Then the Cosmos - 25 Years of Chandra X-ray Science: nasa.gov/missions/chandra/cass - on Aug. 26, 1999, NASA’s #Chandra X-ray Observatory opened its powerful telescopic eye in orbit and captured its awe-inspiring “first light” images of Cassiopeia A, a supernova remnant roughly 11,000 light-years from Earth; 25 years later, Chandra has repeated that seminal moment of discovery again and again, delivering – to date – nearly 25,000 detailed observations of all kinds of objects.

X-rays may not be visible to the human eye, but technology allows us to visualize them — even in three dimensions. A virtual reality platform from the Smithsonian Institution called #Voyager allows users to explore 3D models of some objects imaged by the #Chandra X-ray Observatory, like this one of supernova remnant IC 443. With the Voyager platform, you can rotate the model, zoom through it, and explore the various components of the real space phenomenon.

Space Snapshot

This montage of 25 new images created with data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory was released to commemorate the telescope’s 25th anniversary in space. The collection is a sampling of the wide range of objects that the telescope has observed, from nearby objects like Jupiter (bottom, second from left) to the very center of our galaxy (upper right). “Not a bluff”—#NASA’s #budget would shut down long-lived #Chandra #XRay #telescope
Chandra almost didn't make it to orbit on a dramatic launch of space shuttle Columbia 25 years ago.
NASA says it can no longer afford to fund Chandra at levels it has since it launched in 1999. Agency has diminished budget for #science this year, and the reductions may continue next year due to spending caps in a deal between #Congress and #Biden admin to suspend the federal debt ceiling.
