Eyesight testing aside, there are lots of other reasons to visit the lovely market town of Barnard Castle in Co Durham, North East England. I'll give you the Grade I listed medieval castle ruins, which tower above the peat-stained River Tees and Bowes Museum for starters.
For anyone puzzled by the 'eyesight testing' reference, click on the link below.

The magnificent interior of St Mary's Church at Studley Royal, North Yorkshire.
Considered to be one of the finest examples of High Victorian Gothic Revival architecture in England – it certainly has a WOW factor!
Located within the World Heritage Site of Studley Royal Park, it's probably passed by many of those heading to visit the ruins of Fountains Abbey.
As can be seen, it is extravagantly decorated, influenced by 13th century English Gothic styles, containing coloured marble, stained glass and painted and gilded figures.
It is preserved in the guardianship of English Heritage and is managed by the National Trust.
St Mary's is open daily from end of March - end of October 1pm – 3:30pm.

The former Augustinian Gisborough Priory, was founded in 1119 as the Priory of St Mary by Robert de Brus, an ancestor of the Scottish king, Robert the Bruce.
It's situated in the small attractive market town of Guisborough, which as you can see, has evolved a slightly different spelling.
You wouldn't think it now, but this was once one of the richest monastic foundations in England.
Now in the care of English Heritage, the ruins of Gisborough Priory are regarded as among the finest surviving examples of early Gothic architecture in England.
Unfortunately, there's not a great deal left of what once was and I read that the only reason this bit is still standing is because it was thought to be an attractive backdrop to some gardens that were added later!

The footbridge across the River Wear to the romantic ruins of Finchale Priory, Co Durham.
Anyone remember the toll charge of 1d (pre-decimalisation) each way? A chap in a toll booth on the priory side collect the toll.
Always recall camping here in the Whitsun school holidays of June 1968, the first time I ever spent a night under canvas.
It was quite an eventful few days, marked by the assassination of one Robert F Kennedy.
At the time, Kennedy was running for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Sunshine has been in short supply across North East England today, so here's a photograph I took last weekend on the coast of Northumberland.
This is Dunstanburgh Castle's Lilburn Tower, dating from 1322 and named after John de Lilburn.
It is thought to have been the residence of an important official, originally quite well appointed, having fine windows with window seats looking out across Embleton Bay.

Re-visiting the historic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle on the Northumberland coast this afternoon.
The Grade I listed 14th-century castle was built between 1313 and 1322, taking advantage of the site's natural defences, an outcrop of the Great Whin Sill.
The property is owned by the National Trust but managed by English Heritage.
The location is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
