The bridgeheads of the Remagen Bridge (actually Ludendorff Bridge) between Remagen (1) on the left bank of the Rhine and Erpel (2) on the right bank of the Rhine in Rhineland-Palatinate, which was destroyed in 1945.
Completed in 1918, the bridge gained a certain notoriety when American soldiers succeeded in capturing it in March 1945 so that they could cross over to the right bank of the Rhine.
The Nazi military tried in vain for a long time to destroy the bridge in order to stop the Americans' advance.
A plaque (on the Erpel side) and the American feature film "The Bridge of Remagen" (1969) commemorate the time.
The Remagen bridgeheads house a "Peace Museum".
