#OpenPrinting is a fantastic project that has genuinely made the experience of printing on Linux easier; we published a blog post last month about how now it "just works": securedrop.org/news/implementi

Unfortunately, its leader @till was recently laid off and is now looking for other funding.

Please support him and the OpenPrinting project if you're able:

But your work, as done in #Go will be very helpful for Go developers to integrate scanning, especially as I am working on replacing #SANE by Scanner Applications, which are software emulations of #AirScan (driverless) scanners, and so your Go code can make scan frontends written in Go use any scanner.

OpenPrinting is an essential piece of the free software system infrastructure and it needs to be kept in its good shape in which it is currently, many people appreciating my work and sometimes even telling that for them printing works better than under Windows or macOS.

Any help is appreciated, including just boosting this thread.

and more than 30 Canonicalers have connected with me on LinkedIn.

Now I want to continue doing OpenPrinting for a living, and need a way to do so. I am currently working with the Linux Foundation to make OpenPrinting an organiation which can receive sponsor funding. So now I am looking for sponsors.

Even greater would be, if independent of this somebody could hire me to continue OpenPrinting ...

With the time, Canonical has grown and created internal structures as a big-tech, especially how employees are evaluated. With my mostly external work I got a victim of it and they laid me off. All my colleagues do not really understand why I got fired, as they consider my work really important. Got ~30 "I am really sad that you have to go, you do not deserve it, you are doing great work" answers to my good-bye e-mail

Urgent help for OpenPrinting needed!

As many here know, I am co-founder and lead of OpenPrinting since 2001, known as the print guru for Linux and free software by many. I also got one of the 8 fellows of the Linux Foundation for this.

Up to now I was working at Canonical, hired back in 2006 just to run OpenPrinting and also to maintain printing-related Ubuntu packages.

Please boost.

@itsfoss I have worked for 6 years (2000-2006) at MandrakeSoft/Mandriva in Paris, and my very first task was switching from LPD (Line Printer Daemon, line printers are kind of high-speed electric typewriters) to #CUPS and so Mandrake was the first distro with CUPS and easy printing.

So whatever Mandrake version was released in fall of 2000 was the first ever Linux distro on the world which used CUPS.

And that was the foundation of #OpenPrinting !

Here is the GSoC project we need a Rust-experienced mentor for:

wiki.linuxfoundation.org/gsoc/

It is Rust bindings for libcups, versions 2.x and 3.x.

We already have some candidates interested in it, so we need the mentor ASAP, to already help us select the best candidate.

Please contact us via the contact channels on the linked project idea page.

And please boost this, thanks.

Hi, anybody here is experienced in Rust (perhaps even also in creating bindings for a C library/API) and would like to mentor a #GSoC contributor for OpenPrinting? The contributor will work a total of 3 months full-time (or 350 hours) in the time from May to November this year on the project and they will get a stipend from Google.

Only additional requirements are a minimum age of 18 and not to want to participate as GSoC contributor this year or in any later year.

@zygoon @frameworkcomputer And now I got it actually working! Had to buy an #iFixit toolkit as no Framework screwdriver was supplied and have also bought a 256GB micro-SDXC card to replace the supplied 64GB one.

But 64GB is actually sufficient, only the supplied setup had only a 16GB root partition with an 8GB-sized file system in it.

So what one has to do is to extend the partition and the filesystem (use resize2fs) to the card's capacity.

Printing works perfectly!

At OpenPrinting we are full steam in the preparations for the Google Summer of Code 2025!

Many enthusiastic contributor candidates are already chatting with us, watching our videos, reading our introductions, studying our code, doing onboarding exercises ...

And what about you? We have listed 15 exciting project ideas, or you bring your own.

... or it just has a severe bug.

Many people are complaining, see here on The Register:

theregister.com/2025/01/02/sca

Or see this thread on Microsoft's community forum (recent comments):

That is insane.

Workaround/Fix: Switch to #Linux, or at least use #SANE under #WSL (NOTE: Command line use required). Or wipe machine and install #Windows10.
