@peter @LJ Once the corporations abandon the open web, the small web will still be there. The idea that the web can only exist if companies can make money off of it has always been wrong. I still remember before e-commerce was a thing and websites existed because people wanted to share knowledge and art with other people. That never went away, it just got this huge steaming truckload of corporate money-making bullshit dumped on top of it, claiming to be Web 2.0 (or is it 3.0? I’ve lost track of what they call their crap), so it is harder to find the beauty beneath the shit.
I will be thrilled if the corporate web dies! We used to find content via shared hyperlinks, web rings, and human-curated indices. We can just do that again.

@baldur

All the topical sites (businesses too) that make up the communities of the internet need to connect directly again.

Google trained us to avoid "irrelevant" links because they dilute SEO value and drop you in the rankings. Turned everything into a hub-and-spoke topology with them at the center instead of a true network.

I believe one of the simplest things we can do is bring back Links pages on sites everywhere. Webrings. Etc. Re-weave the net of the '90s.

another reason to potentially support goodinternetmagazine.com — it literally made me get carpal tunnel surgery!!!

become a free member, grab a physical copy, support more issues by buying an annual membership — these are the best ways to help and support!

Good InternetGood InternetA magazine for the non-corporate and independent web, use of code as an art medium, and web development enthusiasm of hobbyists and professionals alike.

Commenting on Comments

While scrolling through the #indieweb category of my rss feeds, I came across several blog posts about whether or not adding a comment section to your blog posts or site was a good idea. I figured I would throw in my two cents.
