Now considering descending into the Linux hole for my - now unused - Surface Pro 7.
It doesn't look quite as straight forward though...

@arstechnica Anyone have experience running Linux on a Windows surface tablet. I have a surface 8 pro. Nothing special needed. Would be nice to be able to run Reolink camera app. Maybe that will work with WINE. #surface #surfacepro

After finally being fed up with the absolute drag Windows 11 had on my #surfacepro 's resources, I wiped it clean and started running a fav of mine, #archlinux . But what I REALLY ended up wanting to do was spin up a clone of my #nixos setup! Of course, doing so was trivial, and I'm stoked! Runs sooo damn good, too (duh)...even built surface patch to get touch functionality

Playing with the Surface Pro 9 i7 model. Trialling this as a replacement for my iPad Pro.
The i7 can keep up with the M1/M2, but by default the Windows power settings give you about half that performance. x86 still cannot compete with Arm's energy efficiency. But you can turn it up and you can make use of all the available performance, unlike with iPadOS. Pros & cons as ever.
