With its extraordinary vibrance, this green-glazed jar could have come out of the kiln yesterday, but it is well over a thousand years old. It was made in China in the 8th century.

This type of brightly glazed #ceramic was made for only about fifty years, during the reign of emperor Minghuang – who ruled from 712 to 756 – when the #Tang dynasty was at its height. At the time, the capital city Chang'an (modern Xian) was one of the most populous and cosmopolitan in the world.

@Gentoo_eV Given that I get a KVM console in time, I will demonstrate my installation guide (gentoo.duxsco.de/) in English using a #Hetzner dedicated server.

  • What? Beyond Secure Boot – Measured Boot on Gentoo Linux?
  • When? Saturday, 2024-10-19 at 18:00 UTC (20:00 CEST)
  • Where? Video call via BigBlueButton: bbb.gentoo-ev.org/

The final setup will feature:

  • #SecureBoot: All EFI binaries and unified kernel images are signed.
  • #MeasuredBoot: #clevis and #tang will be used to check the system for manipulations via #TPM 2.0 PCRs and for remote LUKS unlock (you don't need tty).
  • Fully encrypted: Except for ESPs, all partitions are #LUKS encrypted.
  • #RAID: Except for ESPs, #btrfs and #mdadm based #RAID are used for all partitions.
  • Rescue System: A customised #SystemRescue (system-rescue.org/) supports SSH logins and provides a convenient chroot.sh script.
  • Hardened #Gentoo #Linux for a highly secure, high stability production environment.
  • If enough time is left at the end, #SELinux which provides Mandatory Access Control using type enforcement and role-based access control

Extraordinary Photo of 1,400-Year-Old Ginkgo Tree Shedding Its Leaves

This old ginkgo tree located at Gu Guanyin Buddhist Temple, in Zhongnan Mountain region of #China. The temple was built in #Tang dynasty in 628, with more than 1,400 years history. It’s said this ginkgo tree is planted by Li Shimin, Emperor Taizong himself.

Each year, during late autumn, this 1,400-year-old #Gingko tree sheds its leaves, forming a thick carpet of vibrant yellow around the temple grounds

After a request on the #selfhosted community on Lemmy, I wrote up how I use LUKS, Clevis, and Tang to give me network-bound encryption. This means that I can restart my servers as long as they're on my home network without worrying about having to log in to decrypt the drive, but if someone breaks in and steals my servers and turns them on anywhere else, the data on them is safe. i.am.eddmil.es/clevistang/

Did you know that #toilet paper is (probably) #Chinese?

#Scholar Yan Zhitui (顏之推) was the first to mention it in 589 AD.

He offhandedly remarked that: "Paper on which there are quotations or commentaries from Five Classics or the names of sages, I dare not use for toilet purposes".

A traveler from an #Arabic country confirmed the use in 851 AD.

He was grossed out by the reliance of the Chinese on paper, instead of water.

Similar #Tang #poem:

#旅夜書懷

細草微風岸,危檣獨夜舟。
星垂平野闊,月湧大江流。
名豈文章著,官應老病休。
飄飄何所似,天地一沙鷗。

"Thoughts While Travelling at Night"

Tiny wind on the shore’s fine grass.
Lonely night below a boat’s tall mast.
Over a vast plain stars hang low;
the moon floats; a huge river flows.
How can poems make me known?
I'm old and sick, my career done.
Drifting. What kind of soul am I?
A lone gull between earth and sky.

Sometimes we only have couplets, such as this #fragment, by #Tang #poet Yao He 姚合 (777–843): an entire sweep of landscape painting in ten characters.

天遙來雁小
sky vast arrive goose small
江闊去帆孤
river broad leaving sail lone

VERSION 1

in the vast sky an approaching goose is small
on the broad river a departing sail is lonely

VERSION 2

distant skies stretch on
a wildgoose arriving

so small

mighty waters spread out
a single sail departing

so alone

The great #historian of the #Chinese #MiddleAges #Tang #, Chen Yinke (or -que) #陳寅恪 (1890-1969), spent the last 20 years of his life in #Guangzhou #廣州. Chen, who had lost his eyesight during #middleage, used to take walks on this walkway in shining white concrete leading to his house, as he was still able to distinguish light and dark under the bright #Cantonese sun. I took these photos when I was studying Chinese and #philosophy at Sun Yat-sen University #中山大學 in Guangzhou from 2005 to 2007.
