#trafficEngineers like to say safety comes first, but they mean the crosswalk signal makes walking illegal after a few seconds while the green light stays on for several more seconds, partly because the street has been made twice as wide as necessary, "for safety". They're just ensuring car speed, and that almost nobody who can afford a car will walk, bike, or take transit. This is fundamentally the opposite of safety. #20isPlenty #FuckCars #BanCars

@daihard @gcvsa @ascentale can't agree enough on sharing your routes, your experiences, your advocacy and knowledge of biking around your city or town. Disagree on 22ft being a code requirement for a bus route, I don't care what #trafficEngineers say, a bus will literally fit between two steel+concrete #bollards if there is an 8.5ft gap, and you can add a retractable bollard between or 📸 to make a "bus gate" that *only* a bus can go through. #FuckCars #BanCars #ontvlechten #TacticalUrbanism

“Oregon would be dedicating funding to safer streets while at the same time outlawing the changes on the ground that are needed to make those streets safe.” [even ODOT #trafficEngineers are already to the left of this Jarvis-brained nonsense, and the widest legal vehicle is just over 8ft without mirrors] #VisionZero

BikePortland · Trucking advocates face headwinds in push for mandatory 12-foot lanesA rare and bold attempt to circumvent process and enshrine what should be a transportation engineering decision into state law.

#FietsProfessor says the past 100yrs of #trafficEngineering seems like it was set in stone. The language we use shapes the way people think, "traffic jam / clog" is the language of sewage. And "closing streets" to cars creates #openStreets for children. Also most people find #transportation boring but #freeRangeKids, #SchoolStreets, #BikeBus capture more attention. Make #trafficEngineers argue against the idea of #AutonomousChildren not #Cyclists. @TheWarOnCars

Me [catching up] why are you honking?
Driver: you're on the roadway.

#trafficEngineers: 🔶 🚲 "on roadway"

Obviously drivers can't read that way over there, cowering on the other side of the sidewalk so cars won't hit it. (Yeah, sidewalks are not able to prevent cars from hitting pedestrians, but we can just "share" traffic lanes and drivers will follow the rules and pay attention like good little robots (and no not even the robot drivers follow the rules.)) #BikeTooter

The #trafficEngineers' reluctance to put any unyielding #Bollards of steel and concrete in the place where they put paint or plastic posts is a lot of excuses about safety but fundamentally it is admitting that drivers simply will not reliably stay on their side of the line and/or the posted speed without somebody standing there and pointing a gun at them. If you're confident enough that unarmored people could safely put their body there, drivers better not hit anything that occupies that spot.

This intersection is a whole encyclopedic fuckery of everything that's wrong with #trafficEngineers. The curb radius designed for high-speed turns through the bike lanes and to avoid damaging the plastic sticks, they're set far away from the place we actually want drivers to be turning, around some obstacle so they don't squeeze people on bikes into the curb. This will also piss off all of the residents who drive everywhere, who depend on the existing left turn pockets for basic mobility 🙄

Cars that passed us on the steep part of the corbett hill were just getting a green light to cross Barbur when we caught up (about 1.5 miles later.) Had we been a few seconds later to the light we would have had to wait for the next cycle. The city being covered with thruway stroads is just a constant tax of impediment to mobility and drivers aren't even moving faster than people on e-bikes with 100ft+ hill climbing 🙄 #trafficEngineers, engineering traffic.
