When we look back at #Meta, #Xitter, #Bytedance, #Google and #Tencent twenty years from now, we'll think of them as we think of #ImperialBrands, #BritishAmerican and #PhilipMorris today.

The social and societal consequences of the dopamine predators won't be forgotten and it won't be forgiven.

We managed to bring #BigTobacco to their knees -- let's do the same to #BigSocial.

We need to ban targeted advertising and behavioral tracking. Put the predators in jail.

People had to die for freedom & to legally be seen as equal & as humans. If you think living in digital silos & blocking out everything you disagree with will make the world a better place, I have a planet to sell you. I find the #fediverse to be harmful to progress as people are encouraged to make homes in these siloed echo chambers. It’s also a space that discourages global search, full text search and quote posts : tools that are actively used by Black & Brown folks and activists. These spaces have long been harmful to Black and Brown folks yet the lot of you talk about how much “better, ethical and enjoyable it is. That often tells me a lot about who you all are. Many people in their first hour here have had worse experiences than in a decade plus on #BigSocial If you want this space to be some left-leaning white utopia then fine, but stop advertising it as a space for all and stop attacking spaces like #Bluesky that makes it easier for Black and Brown folks to have a digital experience they are comfortable with. #fediverse #Blackfedi #BlackTwitter #fedi #Twittermigration

I see people making judgments about those that still remain on #BigSocial those that use “ #AI “ , those that work for #governments those that don’t use #foss etc whatever purity tests you lot have. I don’t respect you people. You’re the same people that have nasty racist, sexist, homophobic family, friends and colleagues that you call “good people” some of you are also these kinds of people yourselves with. The majority of the people you are critical of happen to be marginalised folk. People that don’t have the means, resources, support, time etc to do these things thus “convenience” is a big part of how they survive.

Does this bsky architecture just replicate Jack's threat model from when he was running a #BigSocial site?

auth = delegate to PDS
censorship = have govt chase PDSes
bad content = blame labellers
bad algo(s) = blame FeedGen marketplace

Instead of trying to proactively design a better social experience, could the intention be to shed liability for all those thorny problems by ... outsourcing them?

Instead of doing slight tweaks on the #BigSocial model, there's a very different sweet spot achievable if we focus on client-side algorithms like @mike proposed:

thecanadian.social/@mike/11020

Imagine what kind of #curation decisions (4) could be made if you chose between algorithms (3) which ran in a client-side sandbox (2) that only had access to the posts in your feed (5) + your AP behaviors (6). Which feed subsets you pay attention to could remain totally private! 4/4

TheCanadian.SocialMike Fraser :REDCDN2: (@mike@thecanadian.social)@atomicpoet@mastodon.social You could easily have a market place of algorithms on Mastodon right now. Just build it into the client. There's been an explosion of Mastodon client apps. You could build a client app with configurable algorithms to mine your feeds and present a curated feed. Bluesky isn't doing anything here that couldn't be done right now on Mastodon.

It might help to differentiate social algorithms along various axes:

1. transparency (% logic + params auditable?)
2. where they run (client v. server)
3. who tunes them (you v. site)
4. purpose (#curation v. #discovery)
5. selectable posts (your feed v. broader)
6. behavioral cues (your AP activity v. more)

For example, a classic centralized #BigSocial site runs black-box algos it tunes (1-3) using a broad range of cues to choose from a wide variety of posts to maximize engagement (4-6). 1/4

@atomicpoet,

The gut-response is always a #Twitter vs @Mastodon comparison. I fell for that initially, but quickly realized how Mastodon was a game-changer on a new level.

Fundamentally, Twitter has destroyed the #Web20 model while Mastodon has unleashed the #Fediverse (a #Web30 paradigm collective).

#BigSocial and #BigTech (in general) have opened the eyes of many, moving the innovation pendulum back to the #Web 😀

That's not to say that people don't care about connections made on #BigSocial. But consider how its for-profit nature upsets our natural social equilibrium, putting a price tag on every interaction, disincentivizing communication that doesn't serve the attention economy. Users need to build up so many defenses to even stand up straight, before the next round of "innovation" tips the scales again in favour of monetization. It simply becomes too hard to maintain authentic relationships.

Observation.

Here in the #Fediverse, you are rewarded for adding value. If you are a furry gamer, offering insights to your community either on your instance that you chose in order to be in proximity with other furry gamers, or by the use of hashtags, your insights will be well-received, boosted, and engaged with.

On #BigSocial you’re rewarded for fomenting controversy. Starting fights with other furrys or denigrating other gamers is your path to engagement
