Old news but fun anyway. Instead of forced to use a bicycle, how about given a taste of freedom on a bicycle? The answer to congestion alleviation is so close but people can't quite grab on to it.

My commute to work is fairly tame 5 miles (8 km), but I wish a lot more of it was on the paved bike trail instead of having to use the sidewalk and parking lot (the adjacent streets and drivers on them are less than ideal). So today I decided to track how much of my path was on which surface, here's a breakdown:

  • Residential street: 0.75 mile (1.2 km)
  • Wide sidewalk: 1.5 miles (2.4 km)
  • Bike trail: 1.5 miles (2.4 km)
  • Parking lot (next to an awful road): 0.25 mile (0.4 km)
  • Semi industrial street: 1 mile (1.6 km)

The bike trail segment (pictured) is right in the middle of the commute, which breaks up the cautious and bumpy ride enough on either side.

Since I might have to comply with a forced RTO order starting this summer, I'm actually glad to be inheriting my first #EBike from my in-laws, because I think there's a *chance* I'd be able to use it safely for the commute.

But maps estimate the 12 miles will take me an hour with a regular bike. Any #BikeCommuting experts able to give me a guess what that might be with a basic electric engine assist? It's mostly flat. TIA!

Bicycling Monterey 💚🌎🌍🌏

Since we were heading home from town during rush hour, we opted to take the long way home—biking partway via the car-free coastal trail. As soon as we were on streets again, we felt the stress of hurried drivers seemingly rushing to their destinations at this time of day.
