So this is where my peeps at!

Hello everyone, my name is Børge and I am happy to get back into the BSD world, though only for personal projects for now.

I was a sysadmin for a small telco a while ago and we used Solaris/SPARC and FreeBSD/i386 for our servers, while I tried my hand at OpenBSD for my personal server. The network was all Cisco at the beginning, with some Juniper equipment for peering at the end but I did not get any experience with those unfortunately. I do have a certificate in SS7 somewhere, the signaling protocol telcos use for voice calls, but have forgotten pretty much all of it.

These days work is "cloud everything", which all seems to be based on Linux-something.

Reminiscing of "the good, old days" I wondered if I could run a BSD server anywhere to tap into my sysadmin background a little, or if I would have to use some Linux distribution.

Searching for BSD hosting providers, I am very happy I discovered #OpenBSDAms which I use for OpenBSD hosting (obviously).

Then I came across #BoxyBSD where I was lucky enough to get a FreeBSD instance.

Last but not least I came across a cheap VPS provider where I could run NetBSD. I don't mention the provider because I'm not sure I can recommend them yet.

I've been on Mastodon a little while, mostly reading as there is so much of interest to find here, though also because I'm quite shy, but hope to maybe post something about what I do now and then.

I really like all the *BSDs, they just do things in a way that seems sensible to me, so being here feels a lot like coming home.

I have found an interesting quirk with my freeBSD installation, running on my SATA SSD, which I mount through an USB tray, directly to the USB port on the computer.

As long as i leave the second port of the USB tray open, everything runs fine and smooth. The moment I mount another drive in the second port, freeBSD only does the initial part of the startup sequence and then complains that it cannot go any further.

No further explanation given

Seeking for log files is not an option because the operating system itself doesn't boot.

Where in the documentation should I look for this type of issue?

Finally I've captured some sh photographs of the running minimal freeBSD system

No x.org here. Even mc can't run after the pkg install! It needs proc filesystems installed mounted cfg first

I was surprised that I now need to read documents to find out how my second HDMI IPS LED display can be turned on in text mode, something that happens automatically in Linux out of the box 🎁

As you can see here the first part of my freeBSD installation is going smoothly

My 2.5GBit NIC it's not supported but my Wi-Fi NIC is properly supported so everything is good, so far

I've just installed the free BSD handbook which requires the network so extra proof that my Wi-Fi NIC is working magnificently

What is also evident is that you should not ignore warnings that you're HDD set up will not boot. It turns out that the drive I used, which has an MBR, not GPT, is not usable in the configuration where I made a second partition / and a third partition /home, the installation goes smoothly but of course it doesn't boot and not surprising GRUB Linux, cannot find a way to make it boot.

So now I have to make a much smaller partition on a GPT USB SSD

It's wise to listen to the options of the installer. Using my GPT partitioned SATA SSD, mounted on a USB tray 📥 I was able to install freeBSD base config without a hitch, jumping into full blown tcsh mode

Due to my brain dead ISP which does not support IPv6 for clients in 2K25(!) I cant access my boxyBSD box.

boxyBSD is thus so far away from me :(

I have a client connection with fixed IPv4 IP somewhere, but it collapses when I use a free available IPv4 to IPv6 tunnel service.

Instead of sitting and twiddling my fingers on my Bass guitar(s) generating random() notes, I decided to get an image of the latest freeBSD and play with it locally, until I can get my ISP to provide all of us with a (set) of free IPv6 addresses because we pay them for a full service here in my country

Hey #homelab users!

You probably already know me by my free @BoxyBSD project and I often got asked about IPv4 addresses. Currebtly, I tinker with a new but also honestly not free service. The idea is creating a static IP service for homelab users. I'm aware that there're already some around, so what could be some benefits here?

- Static single #IPv4 & #IPv6 /48 (so you can subnet your homelab to several /64 without breaking #slacc)
- Bigger subnets (IPv4: /29, /28, /27 | IPv6: /32)
- Full RIPE personalization (inc. abuse & Co)
- #OpenVPN, #Wireguard, #GRE Support
- Auto configure (e.g., you load the wireguard config on any client and the addresses Arena immediately bound to that interface)
- Split usage / multiple tunnels: Use different IPs from your subnets at different locations
- Integration into #BoxyBSD
- Location in Germany or Netherlands (selectable)
- Hosted on redundant #FreeBSD nodes

Pricing:
- The starter package probably around 10€/month (not more) + 15€ setup including 2T traffic
- Pricing for addiriinal/larger subnets not yet sure, probably higher setup fees to avoid hoppers and spamers to keep the addresses clean
- Optional traffic packages (when exceeding speed Limit of 10Mbit which should still be ok for most homelabs)

World this be interesting? Im aware that many ones already do this by VPS themselves, so this might just be a bit easier and optionally offering whole networks including RIPE personalizations.

The #BoxyBSD project is taking a pause from provisioning completely free #vps instances / #vserver. For further questions, reach out to @gyptazy or in our Matrix chat.

After publishing the new self-service portal and making it easier to use and get a free VPS instance, we got a lot more new users who requested an instance than usual. We’re not out of resources but we want to provide a great and reliable service and have a buffer for upcoming things.

We’re already restocking the resources and adding new nodes to the project but temporary stop provisioning new instances. In the meantime, we will provide new services that will make the overall experience for users much better and easier.

We already started this with the new #NAT64 gateways and the new free #loadbalancing service that allows you to serve your website also on #IPv4, even your box is #IPv6 only.

We’re addicted to the #BSD community and hope to provide your quickly more #FreeBSD, #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, #DragonflyBSD and all the other bsd based systems again. In the meantime - have fun and #RUNBSD

We just added a free #loadbalancing service to #BoxyBSD!

This new feature got added by @gyptazy in addition to the newly introduced #NAT64 gateways to make your life easier and is currently tested with a few users! This provides you the ability to make your website also reachable by #IPv4 even your box is only running on #IPv6. This feature can be managed from your self-service portal and simply requires you to add a DNS name that should be balanced and to point the DNS A record to a given IPv4.

Making the legacy internet life easier, we hope for a higher #BSD adaption where people might be more motivated to try #FreeBSD, #NetBSD, #OpenBSD or even #opensolaris with #illumos.
