Once a magnificent old growth tree. Chopped down by loggers many years ago; its trunk uprooted over time. It has rested on these Nitinat Lake shores for a long time.
There's big trunk graveyards in backroad lakes all over the island.

This little hero is already basically just black and white, so the #MonochromeMonday treatment serves to sharpen up its look even more.

This is a monochrome image. A tern caught in flight looking a little in the camera’s direction but mostly down, almost all white except a stripe of black across the eye, with darker edges on the back of the wings and its tail. Its tail is two sharp forks of feathers, its wings come to points, and its beak is dark and thin and sharply pointed. The wings are angled back and mid-flap. It looks very sharp-edged and aerodynamic in its flight.

Behind it we see the sky, the bay water below it, part of a ship and and hills with scrubby vegetation all forming a blurred background.

A closer outcropping of land with dried grasses and small bushes is directly below and behind the bird, but the tern is the only thing fully in focus.
