Stadtholder Prince Maurice Lying in State, Adriaen Pietersz van de Venne, c. 1625
Prince Maurice died on 23 April 1625 at the age of 57. Rumour had it that he was poisoned. However, an autopsy proved that his death was due to an abscess on his liver. Shortly afterwards, he was embalmed and laid in state, dressed in a fur-lined tabard, as seen in this small portrait. The burial took place in Delft on 20 September

Justice, Artus Quellinus (I), 1650 - 1651
Both façades of the Town Hall are surmounted by three bronze statues. On the front elevation, Peace is flanked by
the virtues Wisdom and Justice, of which these terracotta figures are the scale models. On the rear elevation, Atlas shoulders the celestial globe, with Temperance and Vigilance at his side. The message expressed here is that universal peace, on earth and in heaven, depends on these four virtues.

The Night School, Gerard Dou, c. 1660 - c. 1665
Light and dark, virtue and vice are juxtaposed here. Bathed in bright candlelight, a girl earnestly recites her lesson, while in the shadows the schoolmaster admonishes a boy. In the foreground, a second pupil, candle in hand, helps another with his schoolwork.
The candlelight here symbolizes reason.

LOL always interesting to see what people are posting on Craigslist. Not driving back that direction anytime soon but these are popular for people with retro campers.

Remove rust, lightly sand if necessary, repaint. Or just replace the drain plug (replacement available from outdoors retailers online/etc.)

(As coolers, they suck, not enough insulation and very thin walls, my parents had this exact model and the time to melt all the ice in there in summer fishing/camping was 12 hours).

‘Arrangement in Yellow and Gray’: Effie Deans, James Abbott McNeill Whistler, c. 1876 - c. 1878
Whistler here connected painting with music and literature, alluded to by the title of this piece. He used the musical term ‘arrangement’ to draw attention to the composition of colours. Later on, he added the literary subtitle ‘Effie Deans’ after the heroine of a novel by the Scottish writer Walter Scott. The model posing for Whistler in this painting is Maud Franklin, who worked with him for more than fifteen years.

#Random question: I keep hearing from people about "Zines" and positive comments on them, and I still don't quite understand what they are (aside from their production being from individuals, limited copies, photocopied?). Any examples on what they are all about? Why people like them? #zines

(Update: decided to go for it, blue brake cables and blue shifter cables, hopefully similar blue LOL... ordered off eBay from random small businesses).

Today's hard #BikeRepair #BikeRestoration decisions:

1. Switch out the 1974 shifter and brake cable housings? (from 1974, white, yellowing)

2. If so, go for blue (complementary to yellow and orange), or back to white?

(currently leaning towards blue, since I just custom painted this bike, might as well go 100% on the non-standard colors LOL)

The Grand Vizier Crossing the Atmeydanı (Horse Square), Jean Baptiste Vanmour, 1720 - 1737
The Atmeydanı was Istanbul’s large, central square. Two obelisks recall the fact that the area had been a hippodrome in ancient times. The grand vizier, on horse-back at lower right centre, is accompanied by soldiers and preceded by two servants. They carry a prayer rug and a cushion in case he is called to prayer while en route.
