#ImmutableOS

Hey #linux users. Please boost.

I maintain (remotely) ~10 linux laptops for a client. I've used #ubuntu LTS for years because they don't need anything fancy, stability is more important that bang-up-to-dateness. But I've gone off Ubuntu because of #snaps and it increasingly pushing adverts/pro-services.

Anyone got any experience with remote admin-ing and maintaining linux laptops? Would prefer #gnome based.

@triskelion @purism I appreciate what GrapheneOS and other projects are doing. I wish gOS good luck in:
- getting early access to future #AOSP sources as development is no longer public.
- fixing the myriad of #Google shenanigans with the OS and Chromium.
- getting mental health help for the main developer - he deserves all the help he can get.

Unlike gOS, #Linuxphone development is not riding on decades of Google funded development of the OS. Progress is therefore slower but it is improving gradually.

Besides #PureOS, there is also #Mobian and #postmarketOS - I especially look forward to the latter's future #ImmutableOS version which would have security benefits as well.

"Il est question ici de vendre des ordinateurs et des téléphones avec un système #Linux pré-installé dessus, assemblé par et basé sur #GNOME (...) les développeurs GNOME travaillent depuis quelques années à rendre leurs applis adaptables aux petits écrans. Il ne s’agit pas de versions différentes, mais bel et bien de vos applis de bureau, qui se redimensionnent automatiquement pour être utilisables à l’écran tactile."

I recently came across akademy.kde.org/news/2024-09_a and a small piece caught my eye, "One way to achieve the desired level of integration is to control the entire software stack, right down to the operating system. This is also in the works for KDE, as Harald Sitter is working on a new technologically advanced operating system tentatively named KDE Linux". Has anyone tried it? It seems to be available at invent.kde.org/sitter/kde-linu cc: @akademy #kde #ImmutableOS

One of the things that always strikes me as kind of wierd about the current state of immutable distros; is how things like cli shells factor in.

Like it doesn't square right to me, to entertain installing #zshell via distrobox or flathub, and I generally WANT it as my default shell.

All the os-tree documentation in #Fedora and all the transactional-update documentation in #OpenSuse seems to imply your recklessly breaking the spirit of the immutable distro by adding it to the base system.

This has more or less lead me to believe that immutable linux distros are not for me, despite not minding flatpak much at all these days.

Maybe im missing something? #zsh #ImmutableOS #immutable #immutabledistro #distrobox #flatpak #linux #floss

There are already several #immutable linux #distros available. Run any of the following on top: #flatpaks, #appimages #snaps, Compatibility layers like #WINE or #Anbox, #virtualized OSes, tools like #distrobox, #emulators, etc, & never worry about system stability again—pieces of the next generation linux puzzle!

I was already excited by the concept of #distroagnostic packaging uniting the linux realm, but the ideas of an #ImmutableOS completes the picture!

“An immutable OS is one in which some, or all, of the operating system file systems, are read-only, and cannot be changed. Immutable operating systems have a lot of advantages....” No viruses! no instability!, no dependency hell!

With immutable OS technology, along with distro-agnostic sandboxed packaging formats, #dependencyhell, viruses, and instabilities are a thing of the past!
