One thing that really pisses me off personally is the #regression in terms of #Messenger #Apps.
My personal distaste and dislike for #proprietary, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider #services like #Signal ¹ ², #Telegram, #Discord ³, #WhatsApp ⁴, #Slack, #MicrosoftTeams, etc. aside:
WHY is there no #CrossProvider #Messenger to handle that shite?
WHY does everyone of these shitty providers think people want to download their #bloated #WebApp that takes up triple digit Megabytes if not entire Gigabytes and will gobble up all the #RAM and #CPU each of them can??
This problem ain't new and already got solved for corporate social media ages ago! (Not to mention actually good messengers!)
I mean API 0 - style access because obviously none of the platforms will allow, endorse or support such an endeavour and actively fight the developers and users !
So yeah, consider this a call for a @gajim / #Gajim or @pidgin / #Pidgin for garbage platforms!

I've used #IRC though. Love that tech, the low critical mass is the only reason I don't use it today.
I couldn't figure out how to add my #matrix account to the Chats app, so that's why I fell back to using #irc
That said, I'm surprised the #gnome weather app worked... because it doesn't on normal #alpinelinux o_O.
I'll try to add my calendar and contacts later and see if I can make an actual phone call... crazy stuff :}
Updating from my #alpinelinux laptop... because typing on the #postmarketos #gnome shell is really challenging/unforgiving both in terms of latency and accuracy.
I was not a fan of #firefox, especially with the bottom address bar, so I used console to install #epiphany via:
$ doas apk add epiphany
Not only does epiphany look better on the phone, but it also allows me to install web apps, which I did for #thelounge, a web-based #irc client.
Day 3 of running Windows XP in 2025 is up.
I opened Enafore to check my Mastodon replies. It worked—for a few seconds. Then the notifications started. And they didn’t stop. Ping. Ping. Ping. I couldn’t reply. I could barely move the cursor. I watched the system buckle in real time.
So I tore XP apart.
I disabled over thirty services, deleted Windows File Protection, nuked the prefetch cache, rewrote shutdown behavior, and killed every background process that wasn’t strictly mine. If it touched the network, tried to log something, or ran without permission, it’s dead.
And you know what? Enafore runs fine now. JAWS doesn’t read new posts live, but I don’t care. I can read. I can reply. XP obeys.
Discord, though? Wouldn’t even load in the browser. Just a blank page. So tomorrow, I’m pulling in what channels I can through IRC. It’s not over.

Turns out #XMPP + #IRC transport + Conversations (Andoid XMPP client) is an amazing experience on mobile. Besides, having the transport to keep persistence of the IRC channels works as a bouncer for free.
Not sure if I can say "the best" because I don't know many IRC clients on Andoid, but I'm very happy how it all works.

1/3 - @internetarchive I miss being a kid on mIRC. Before what most people today classify as social media, before ICQ, MSN Messenger, FrontPage 98, StarCraft, RuneScape, Napster, BitTorrent, or Stack Overflow. I was a kid fresh out of BBS discovering the “Information Superhighway” on a dial-up connection.
