SN F-units at Niles
Set of Athearn Genesis HO Sacramento Northern (SN) F-units at the Tri-City Society of Model Engineers model railroad in the historic Niles depot in Fremont, CA on Friday night, February 28, 2025.
The real SN 301-A was an EMD F3A. Reportedly, it was built in 1948 as NYO&W 501, builders number 3146. Purchased in 1957 it became SN 301-A. It was retired circa 1970, traded to EMD.

Though not native, I grew up and continue to live in New England — “the hard, impenetrable core of the United States” as described by the late British journalist Patrick O’Donovan.
Married with two children, I am an Eagle Scout, a career Civil Engineer, and member of the United Church of Christ. My interests include American history (particularly the colonial and Revolutionary periods), transportation infrastructure, home improvement (electrical and HVAC), model railroading, Rock & Roll, art, science, moderate politics, and Christian Universalism.
An intermodal train heads west across a crossing with CP unit 8759 as the DPU (Distributed Power Unit) on the rear.
To get the telephoto effect i used a 300mm telephoto lens. I was at one end of my yard and the diorama was at the other end about 6m or 20 feet away.
The image is focus stacked and I extended the sky to hide my crappy 1:1 scale fence.
Hobbies in recent yrs have included #homebrewing and #modelrailroading. This past year I've been into #radioastronomy & am a member of the Soc of Amateur Radio Astronomy.
So far I've been experimenting with #ELF - detecting whistlers from thunderstorms. As you can imagine, living in the S. Plains of the US are a good source!
I've also been operating a #SuperSID (Solar Ionosphere Disturbance) #VLF receiver but WinPC was unreliable so replacing with a #raspi. I'll post my progress & results!
