I often get asked about how I do software development with a #ScreenReader and I also have some thoughts about #DevTool #Accessibility. Finally found the time to write my thoughts down properly.

Here's a quick demo on how to enable TTS on the Nintendo Switch 2 from the home screen. Hopefully these menus are the same across all devices, though I have no way to know that for certain.
Here's another one for the #blind #hiveMind primarily, but feel free to chime in if you have a good idea.
For an upcoming video/stream, I am looking into video editing as a #screenReader user. I'd like to cover both #mac and #windows and am curious what solutions have worked well for people in the past.
Conditions are no mouse usage at all, app needs to be screenreader-compatible, ideally somewhat full-featured both for #audio and #video.
Be it #iMovie, #Clipchamp, #quicktime, #reaper, a dreaded #AI tool, tell me thy success stories, thy struggles and thy findings! :) #accessibility
A: "Hey I just noticed that on your website, feature X doesn't work"
B: "Oh really? Thanks for reporting we'll fix that"
a: "Hey I just noticed that on your website, feature X doesn't work for #screenreader users and hasn't for over a year"
B: "It's very important to us and is on our roadmap, thanks for reporting baii"
If you work in, or need, #accessibility you'll be intimately familiar with this frankly embarrassing situation. If you're a #developer, let this be your trigger to educate yourself on the doubtless extensive docs your UI toolkit of choice (yes, that includes #react and #html) maintains on accessibility so you don't have to send that response and make a human being feel like they don't belong to society, because there's a non-zero chance that's EXACTLY how someone might read such a dismissal. I woke up to three such emails today and I think I'm done with advocacy today before even starting my day. Shit's depressing as all fuck. How's your day? :)
Thanks everyone who ask replied so far.
I guess I should be more specifc. My website is about 90% raw HTML. Will the aria-hidden="true"
work in HTML, or must I make a CSS thing and revamp my code? Or is there an HTML way to do this?
For example, here is one of my links:<br><a href="https://ip.me"><img src="https://ip.me/static/favicon-96x96.png" height="18" width="auto"> IP.me</a></br>
(Man I hope that's not too abysmal to listen to. Sorry.)
Thanks again. <3
Hi,
I have a question about screen readers. I have a website and on it I have link. As part of the link's text, I've put in the FavIcons of the websites. They are just some visual fluff for a very simplistic website. Will they be ignored by screen readers? If not, is there a way to make them so?
I at least feel it would be less helpful if it said, "1 900 hotdog's logo, 1-900-HotDog," than just "1-900-HotDog." But that's just me asking.
Being a blind student isn't easy.
Making a difference for kids in school, enables them to make a difference as adults in their community. Does your school have a student who could benefit from a screen reader? And a budget which could benefit from it being FREE? We have the solution!
And if you can help us, it would make a huge difference too!
Screen reader HTML support tables
"With the addition of Gez Lemon to the editing team, work continues on expanding and improving the HTML and screen reader support information."
The weather's cloudy a lukewarm. Perfect for today's stream where I create a "yes, but no" resource for everyone who tells me to just switch to #linux :P
Nah but seriously we'll look at a number of first-time experiences (install, initial boot into the OS ec.) of various popular and less popular distros. I will comment on the #accessibility considerations primarily for #screenReader users and I'm sure other things'll come up. See you bright-eyed and bushy-tailed around 3 PM EST/8P BST/9pm CEST over at https://twitch.tv/ic_null or https://youtube.com/@blindlyCoding. My #peertube account is, unfortunately, not approved yet :) #selfPromo #tech #foss #selfHosting #homeLab #stream #ubuntu #debian #fedora #elementaryOs #kaliLinux #blind
Re this
Current status: preparing a bunch of #linux ISOs so we can look at installers, first-time experience and a bit of usage from a #blind, #screenReader user perspective on this saturday's stream. hey @danirabbit #Elementary 8's gonna be first in line. Also looking at #kaliLinux , #debian, #fedora, #ubuntu and #LinuxMint #justSwitchToLinux #justWatchMeTry #letsJustSeeIfItEvenLetsMe :P

And after I posted I looked at that website more closely and saw that many of the images are not accessible (no alt text).
Sorry about that!
It looks like a useful website for folks who need info on accessible nature trails, but I don't know how helpful it is for folks who use screen readers.
It's a busy day! NVDA 2025.2 Beta 1 is now out: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/nvda-2025-2beta1/
AND In-Process is also out: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-30th-june-2025/ - covering all about NVDA 2025.1, NV Access in the Forbes Accessibility 100, five quick things to try with NVDA 2025.1, and a small end of financial year request: https://www.nvaccess.org/post/in-process-30th-june-2025/
My reply seems to have gotten eaten by Mastodon. I wrote this poll because people are always encourage others to include #AltText for pictures. I know polls like this don't mean anything, but only 10 people replied. Hopefully the technology for pulling text from pictures keeps improving so more people use #AltText

soooo ... do we have any #screenReader #accessible PC hardware monitoring tools that ... y'know ... aren't awful? I don't mean CPU/RAM usage, more ... voltages, component temps, etc.
So far stuff I've looked at (speccy, hardwareMonitor) just haven't been great and basically have me saving a text file and ctrl+f-ing my way through it which ... works, but is a little silly if there's a perfectly good UI right there
@natureworks Needs more descriptive #AltText, such as the other text on the graph.
For Example:
A White Background Bar Graph with light blue bars and Black and Grey text,
The graph has an x-axis range from Poorest to Richest.
The y-axis has grey lines, with 100,000; 200,000; and 300,000 at the top.
Between the 100k and 200k lines is a Text box with an arrow pointing at the bars:
"The Richest 5% captured 70% of Global Growth"
Between the 200k and 300k lines is a Text box with an arrow pointing at the bars stating:
"The Richest 1% captured 54% of Global Growth"
The Highest blue bar on the right, representing the Richest 1% exceeds the 300k line
Below the x-axis is the statment:
"This graph refers to the distribution of pre-tax income among adults aged 20 and over. It is assumed that income is split evenly among adults within a household. Income is measured in 2023 US dollars, constant MER. See our note on Currency Concepts for more information {where Currency Concepts is in blue, indicating a hyperlink}"
"Chart Global Inequality Project {www.Globalinequality.org}- Source: World Inequality Database (May 2025). Embed. Download. Image." {All of the text in this line except Source: and (May 2025) are separate hyperlinks}
"Select [Drop Down Box] Pre-tax income Select Currency Concept [Drop Down Box] Constant MER"
Please update the image accordingly.

Hey @Mer__edith
Apparently the recent @signalapp desktop does no longer work with the NVDA #ScreenReader ? Is this something the team is aware of?
@svenja wrote about that in this German toot:
https://mastodon.social/@svenja@mstdn.games/114742685112296490
#Signal #A11Y #DisabledAlltag #ScreenReader
There's a growing movement on the #fedi that wants people to switch away from Big (US-based) Tech and towards #FOSS alternatives like #Linux, alternatives to #google, #Microsoft, #dropbox etc.
For #screenReader users, that might not be as simple as all that due to #accessibility reasons. This weekend's IC_Null stream aims to dig into this, but I need your help. What tools, services etc. should I look at from an #accessibility perspective? Anyone here who needs their tools evaluated? Anyone here who's curious about a particular tool or suite of tools? Let me know and I'll add it to the list. Anything goes. #selfHosting #blind #tech #EU
