As this is Mastodon, let me pre-emptively point out that, yes, these scientists are aware that >90% of teaching Climate Neutrality is about emissions reductions, not removals.

The IPCC is also aware of this, as am I at the European Commission.

All these people already wrote reports on that, this one is about land sinks and technological removals.

Potential #IPCC rule changes could award planned carbon savings from burning #wood rather than fossil fuels to the wood exporter, not the importer, as per current EU accounting rules... Accounting is much more policy than science.

This publication is our analysis of the draft EU #carbon removal rules for #BECCS and #biochar.

There is a real risk that these methodologies, currently developed by the EU under the #CRCF, end up certifying activities consisting of a mere transfer between the biogenic & geological carbon pools, or even additional CO2 emissions, instead of actually removing it from the air.

Burning #wood, capturing the resulting CO2 & burying it underground, aka #bioenergy with #carbon capture & storage (#BECCS) is often presented as a "solution" for "negative emissions".

But "there’s nothing about taking the decades-old carbon stored in a tree and parking it belowground that will deliver “negative emissions”.

In fact, promoting the logging of more forests will possibly increase CO2 emissions, because logging causes forest ecosystems to leak carbon."
