Way too many ad breaks in this Pluto TV "Three Days of the Condor" presentation. I should've looked to see if I could get it on Kanopy or Hoopla, but I have a certain level of respect for whomever decided to put one of the ad breaks in the middle of the weird sex scene.
That's extremely funny!
Now on #Hoopla! Relics From A Traveling Show has: Whimsy
A gargoyle
Magical schools
Heroic aunties saving the day
Evil bureaucrats getting their comeuppance
(yes, I'm clueless about emoji, but I swear it's a really good bunch stories & you might love one or all of them.)
also at all the usual vendors:

@Priyajsridhar thank you for hosting #writephant today
Since we were talking about community today…
One of the aspects of my latest release, Little Wolf and the Witch, is about finding community — Feilan, the eponymous Little Wolf of the title, has been exiled from his (Viking-like) community, while Remy, the eponymous Witch, has been metaphorically exiled (ostracised) from his.
They find each other (…eventually, it’s enemies-to-lovers), fight monsters of various sorts, and pull together their own community in the process.

Available widely, including on #KoboPlus and #Hoopla
"This type of low quality, #AI generated content, is what we... have come to call AI slop. Librarians... have been dealing with similar problems in the publishing industry for years, and have a different name for it: vendor slurry...
Several #librarians pointed me to IRB Media, a #publisher with hundreds of books on #Hoopla, all of which are seemingly AI-generated summaries of other books."

Enjoying the new round of sessions at the improv group. Finally concentrating on more long-form activities.
Getting to make up some actual stories rather than just snippets and scenes and parlor games.
I find playing with and inventing narrative structure more interesting engaging and memorable than the short-form stuff. More room for story flow and slow build than the previous sessions.
Nice to have some of the folks from the previous sessions and the new players seem good and fun too.
I'm not really at my best at the moment for health reasons, but you barely notice that in the group situation anyway. Everyone supporting each other with the whole being more than the sum of it's parts.
For the #Amazon strike, if you're a #Kindle #reader now would be a great opportunity to try another #ebook store. This isn't comprehensive and I'm not being paid for it. It's just some options to think about.
#Smashwords is great for folks who like to read #IndieAuthors. They also publish things that Amazon things are too naughty for you and they have one of the better author payouts as far as I can tell. #Kobo has a subscription service which is competitively priced with Amazon's #KindleUnlimited and, because they don't require exclusivity, you can get a wider variety of books in #KoboPlus.
Your local #library may also partner with a service like #Hoopla, #Libby, or #cloudLibrary to offer you access to free ebooks and #AudioBooks and the writers still get paid with those options.
My #hoopla library is doing bonus borrows for the last two weeks of December -- you can check out items from a list that don't count against your limit.
Something Shady at Sunshine Haven is now in audiobook! Plus it's in the #Hoopla library app. "One of the things I love about Bock’s writing is that her characters are genuinely nice people, the kind you wouldn’t mind having as friends." In this humorous mystery series, a witty journalist solves mysteries in Arizona and tackles the challenges of turning 50.

Yay for library services!

My books can be browsed here:
https://books2read.com/wendypalmer/
You’ll also find them on #Hoopla, or request them via your library.
Queer romantic fantasy fans who use Hoopla:
I know we’re halfway through the month so you’re probably holding on to your very last borrow like Gollum clutching his Precious, but I’m letting you know my books are now available on Hoopla.
The Uses of Illicit Art — my most popular
Domesticated Magic — my best*
Fair Haven — my favourite
Six Feet of Ridiculous — features my favourite character, introduced at the end of Bastard’s Grace
And then there’s Wild Imperative — technically a YA m/f romantasy but it’s a good deal more low-key than current trends (start of a completed trilogy, the second and third books are queued for upload but it’s taking a while)
Of course, you can always request them for the library service you actually use, or find them via https://books2read.com/wendypalmer/ if you are so inclined.
*to date, let’s hope I haven’t peaked this damn early

August Queer Romance Club book pick - Dionysus in Wisconsin by EH Lupton
By a Mastodon author, @pretensesoup, it’s been shortlisted for the 2024 Lamba Literary Award in Gay Romance and the 2024 Midwest Book Award for fantasy.
Available on #Hoopla, #KoboPlus, all ebookstores and perhaps your library, or EH has kindly offered copies if access is difficult for you (DM her if so).
QRC is open to all, read at your own pace over the month and post about it under #QueerRomanceClub and @queerromanceclub — CW for spoilers if going into details but general observations can be open.
No rules: let’s hear reactions, theories, reviews, favourite quotes etc.
Please also feel free to tag EH in to your QRC post this month, and she’s open to Author Q&A so throw your questions her way.

Dammit I just wasted my last #Hoopla borrow for the month on the German version of the book I wanted (translate the title too, you lazy bastards )
For some reason, #Hoopla’s recommendation algorithm is phenomenally accurate for me compared to the commercial options…this is six for six, the downside being I’ve read every one of them already
Who here has HOOPLA or KANOPY accounts? I was able to get onto Kanopy, but Hoopla seems to have fewer library systems in it. Any ideas on how to get a library card from a different library to get in?
#WalterMosley is one of my favorite authors and certainly my favorite living author. His latest book Every Man A King is a follow up to Down the River Unto the Sea, both apart of his new King Oliver mysteries.
In any case, the audiobooks are masterfully narrated by Dion Graham and just absolutely enjoyable.

You can find many great books and audiobooks via your local public library and listen at your leisure. Two of the most popular apps are #Libby and #Hoopla .
Libby provides e-books and audiobooks, and Hoopla delivers "audiobooks, eBooks, comics, movies, TV, magazines, or music everywhere you have a screen"
https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby
https://www.hoopladigital.com
The federal government has conveniently set up a website to help you search for your local library: https://www.usa.gov/libraries and https://www.careeronestop.org/LocalHelp/CommunityServices/find-libraries.aspx
Or you can just search for "Public Library + Your City or County and State"
I am typing all of this out real slow Riley Freeman style because people are busy and tired and sometimes forget that we have these resources at our fingertips.
Also because this is what the Republicans, third party candidates and those telling you NOT to vote want to take away from all of us.
E-books, audiobooks, movies, music and TV series available at your local public library for you, your children, your siblings, your elders and your friends, free of charge and best of all, no late charges because the content is returned automatically on the due date.
We all know this, but sometimes we get tired and we forget.
In any case, you can pop over to #FOSS @omnivore@pkm.social https://omnivore.app , start a free account and save any of these links as bookmarks to review at your leisure.

I somehow erased the existence of July 31 from my mind: so on the one hand, disappointed to discover on this Monday morning which is not August 1 that I have to wait one more day until I get 6 more borrows from Hoopla, but also, at least that means I have one more day to browse the indie reads in the Smashwords July sale.
