@miki_lou "The new study details a timeline of algal bloom observations in Great Slave Lake, confirming they are a new phenomenon and becoming more frequent.

" 'This was quite a surprising result,' Cederwall said.

" 'It’s quite the unusual type of blooms that we’re seeing up here and kind-of the rapid change that we’ve been seeing.' "

This weekend is the Folk on the Rocks music festival in #Yellowknife #nwt . On the evening before the festival proper, there is a semi-affiliated free music event called Float on the Rocks. A small selection of the Folk on the Rocks performers play a set on the front porch of one of the many houseboats in the area we call Houseboat Bay. To get there, you've got paddle, sail, or motor a boat over, then raft on to the other various canoes, kayaks, paddle boards, etc in attendance. The music's great and so is the atmosphere.

"#Alberta’s government asserted that no industrial wastewater had reached the Athabasca River leading north toward the #NWT, or its tributaries, and as a result the province was under no obligation to inform the territory about the incidents under their transboundary #water agreement." Still, impacts on the watershed are unknown!! cabinradio.ca/246751/news/poli

Cabin Radio · NWT and Alberta say they’ve worked out their water differencesLife's Better at the Cabin

A male Bearded Tit (or Bearded Reedling) perched deep in the reeds at NWT Hickling Broad.

It didn’t make a sound, I only spotted it as the reeds started moving several feet in front of the platform. We’d only stopped for a few minutes break on the bench.

Public hearing starts for Diavik's water licence, leading into mine's upcoming closure
The Diavik mine in the N.W.T. is expected to stop producing diamonds next year, but its current water licence expires before that. Diavik is applying for another one in order to finish production and begin its closure and post-closure monitoring.

From the ashes of wildfires, the #snakes of Canada's north slither on. #NWT hosts Northernmost population of #GarterSnakes in #NorthAmerica.

After a long winter cold winter, #wildlife in the North is chomping at the bit to get out and enjoy the short summer. Those shaking off their winter topor range from bears to frogs and even snakes.

A #subspecies known as the #RedSidedGarter , the serpents have a number of adaptations and behaviours that make living in the North feasible. For one, they winter in large mounds, gathering together by the dozens. This helps offset their "cold blood" — which simply means they're body temperature is the same as the area around them. In the summer, they leave their traditional mounds to hunt, sometimes up to five kilometres away, then return to the same spot every winter.

Two years ago Meta blocked Canadian news. I built a workaround.

ShareTheNews.ca lets you share Canadian news on Facebook, with proper headlines and previews — just like before the ban.

Annexation and U.S. threats to our sovereignty are real, but an even more pressing danger is our cultural absorption and loss of national cohesion.

For many Canadians, verified news has largely vanished from everyday life. But most don’t even know the ban exists.

One in five of us are aware that news is blocked in the places where so many continue to spend the bulk of their online lives.

Provincial election turnout is in decline. Some party leaders are doing more media with U.S. outlets than Canadian ones. And our recent federal election edged us closer to a two-party system than ever before.

We didn’t just lose news from our feeds two years ago — we are losing our sense of a shared story.

That's why I built ShareTheNews.

Try it. Use it. Spread the word, and share the news.

There is zerio benefit to #Canada to build any #fossilFuel pipelines; in every foreseeable future it is a cash-loss. Building a pipeline today is simply transfering tax payer funds to rich people as corruption.

Conversely, unfettered electrical transmission is essential. I understand the reasons #AB 's private electrical industry opposes it: they want a captive market to over-charge. Fine. Build across them, without ties.

And run them north, to #NWT, #Yukon, & #Nunavut.
