Today is "I Love Free Software Day".

A massive, heartfelt thank you to each of you who spends time writing, maintaining, documenting, or supporting Free software.

I am genuinely amazed by just how much one can do with Free software:

Tell me about Free software that you love?

decoded.legalRunning a law firm on Free software (2024 edition)Two years ago, I wrote about running decoded.legal - an English law firm - on Free software.

I was admiring some lovely graphs of energy use and thinking how awesome Home Assistant is today.

I first installed it to track moisture/temperature/temperature from some plant sensors, but the next thing I know I'm making a mostly non-cloud smart home.

I love how it's a real community of people just doing whatever little (or big) thing they want; learning and sharing and making and having fun.

It's been a few weeks since I mentioned some free software that I like. Here I go again!

I spent a bit of time today configuring WireGuard on various hosts. It's a way to set up an encrypted tunnel (VPN) between hosts that can send UDP packets to each other. It's pretty straightforward, and works really well.

I'm sure there are plenty of use cases where it isn't the best solution... luckily I don't have any of those! 😄

The past two weeks I called out popular and widely-used software. This week I'm going the opposite, and mentioning something really niche.

I was looking to print some QR codes and found the lprint software:

msweet.org/lprint/index.html

It supports label printers, and includes a CLI tool as well as presenting them as normal printers to the OS. I was able to get a cheap, used label printer and use it on Linux.

It seems to be a one-person project, nicely done.

I've decided that it would be nice to call out the wonderful software that I use all the time. So maybe one post each Friday?

I'll start with rsync!

It's an efficient way to synchronize files over a network (or even locally).

It's 28 years old, and I use it all the time. For a long time I even used it for incremental backups.

Getting names right is a bit tricky ("/" or not matters), and you need to use SSH or the like for encryption, but what an amazing tool.

Today is the "#ILoveFreeSoftware" day. 🎉

I work with #FreeSoftware basically every day. 👨‍💻

Free Software isn't just software, but a liberation movement. It challenges the notion that when you use software, that justifies that a faceless authority gets to control your computing or punish you for sharing. I say NO to that; but yes to #freedom! ✊

I am thankful and proud to be part of this amazing free software #community. 😊

Let's keep improving society, one commit at a time! 😃
