You going to read me the parasite wasp bedtime story next?
Let's see
#Owl lays #Egg / #Eggs
which hatch(es) into #Owlet / #Owlets
which have a decent chance of eating the #Snake / #Lucifer / (anyone not a #Christofascist)
and if not it dies when the young leave the nest. I guess the parents eat it. Or it cannot climb down tree? Kinda hard to see why not. So, parents are smart enough to eat it when the kids are gone.
Any #Biologists with an expertise on #ScreechOwl want to check my work?
@NickSchwanck @graceghughes
Nothing good it seems:
… given the fact that the snakes are still sometimes eaten by the owlets (and don't survive well once the nest is vacated), this might really by a commensal relationship, where one species reaps a benefit and the other does its best to deal with the situation.

The largest of the two owlets sat in plain sight for a preening session, showing off its new feathers.
One year ago today I was watching a nesting pair of #GreatHornedOwls tending to their #owlets. They were in an old squirrel nest visible from the top story of my #PDX home. I set up my camera to look through a telescope to take photos.

Little sibling trying to get in the spotlight too.
Great horned owlet.
The #GreatHornedOwls had gotten soaked in a deluge. Unfortunately the new “nest” didn’t have much shelter and by then the parents roosted nearby but not with the #owlets. Didn’t take too long for them to dry off.
I happened to capture the moment one of the #GreatHornedOwls fledged, rather clumsily. Their original nest collapsed, sending the owlets 60’ to the ground. We re-nested them in an old milk crate and the parents kept tending them. This was a big surprise for all of us! I’m afraid I was just as clumsy with my camera…
I had #GreatHornedOwls nest near my house last spring. After their nest collapsed, we re-nested them, using an old milk crate. The parents kept tending them. Here’s one practicing balance and strengthening its wings.
I had Great Horned Owls nesting near the house last spring. The original nest collapsed, sending these two owlets 60’ to the ground. Portland Audubon came out and helped re-nest them in an old milk crate I had, attached to a tree. I was able to photograph them from my bedroom. Here is a clip from shortly after they settled in. Their parents kept taking care of them.
Good evening. Who needs to see great horned owlets tonight?
