Have to say that having a ntfy server with proper networking (looking at you, Oracle free tier) and going all in on UnifiedPush has done wonders for mobile phone battery life.

After switching to Molly+MollySocket, I could probably go two days again, opposed to the battery warning on the first evening a couple weeks ago.

Without Mastodon and Lemmy, probably 3 days without a stretch. I still wonder if this Pixel 7a battery will last the full OS support period, new it was 20% / day with doomscrolling.

By the way, I'm having fun looking at some uptime data. Here's some:

%up 99.996 | since Wed Nov 22 10:51:03 2023
%up 99.998 | since Fri Jul 29 09:35:57 2022
%up 99.999 | since Wed Apr 6 14:48:49 2022
%up 99.931 | since Thu Sep 7 08:48:55 2023
%up 99.989 | since Sun Mar 20 18:06:40 2022
%up 99.994 | since Thu Dec 9 17:10:22 2021

In other words, they were only offline for updates that needed a reboot.

These are all leased production servers located in Europe, running FreeBSD with jails and VMs.

No need for Kubernetes or the cloud to get great uptime!

Last night, I set up the new workstation for my father-in-law. He was using a roughly 10-year-old computer with Windows 10 and an old monitor. It has been replaced by an Intel N150 MiniPC and this HP monitor, which was on sale at the shopping center near his house.

The total cost for the setup shown (excluding headphones but including the monitor) was 240 euros.

It's running openSUSE Slowroll, which I'll update occasionally when we visit him.

He started working and exclaimed, "It's super fast!"

You don't need a lot of money to have a valid and performant workstation, especially if you choose the right OS.

My only regret is not being able to use one of the BSDs, as none of them were perfectly supported by the MiniPC.

Brand new blog post up: Get your own domain name!

On not just switching email service provider, but getting a domain name to go with the switch (if you don't already have one), so you can switch again later if needed.

And owning a little bit of your Internet presence.

And maybe later on putting a web site up, too. Maybe. It's not like you have to.

For those who missed last night’s updates, I’m thrilled to announce that @h3artbl33d and I will be co-presenting a talk at #EuroBSDCon: Liberating the Social Web Using #BSD.

We’ll be sharing our experiences and technical decisions along the way.

I’ll be focusing on the BSD Cafe - its services, the story behind it, and most importantly, the human and motivational factors that make this community so special.

Always remember: #OwnYourData !

Stay tuned for more updates!

Good morning, world! I'm extremely sorry about the removal of the replicator from Dovecot 2.4 - it was always my go-to replication tool, and #BSDMail also relied on it. Since I don't have many accounts yet, I can look into alternative solutions.

The one I believe comes closest is Cyrus IMAP, which also has its own clustering and replication systems. Furthermore, Cyrus doesn't have a commercial counterpart, so it's unlikely to be influenced by tight economic dynamics.

On one hand, I'm excited to do these experiments, but on the other hand, with this heat, I would have preferred to do something else 😃
