What’s the cost of a good suit🕴️ these days? At #NASA, apparently, it’s about $500 million. Influential legislators have shown great skill in keeping the agency’s programs funded 💰. The downside to this approach is that it tends to erode accountability, inflate 📈 costs and prolong programs that have little #scientific justification. #America’s space entrepreneurs have seemed frustrated with NASA’s #bureaucratic pace. bloomberg.com/opinion/articles

More information on what Polaris Dawn is, for those that are interested, can be found on the Polaris Dawn website here: polarisprogram.com/dawn/.

It is worth noting that due to the recent Falcon 9 failure (see space.com/spacex-falcon-9-fail), the exact launch date may be uncertain for the immediate future.

Polaris ProgramPolaris DawnNo earlier than summer 2024, SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket will launch the Polaris Dawn mission from Florida. Dragon and the Polaris Dawn crew will spend up to five days in orbit.

During a large #solar ☀️ energetic particle event, the #radiation ☢️ dosage an #astronaut 👨‍🚀 receives inside a #SpaceSuit could exceed 1,000 times 📈 the dosage someone on #Earth receives. That would exceed an astronaut’s recommended lifetime limit by 10 times. Once a forecaster detects 🔭 a #SolarFlare or #CME, the high-energy particles usually arrive to Earth in less than an hour ⏱️. But astronauts on the #Moon’s 🌙 surface would need more time than that to seek shelter. astronomy.com/space-exploratio

Resubmitting a post from yesterday with additional stuff:

Lesson learned from watching many SciFi shows. If there's an airlock, there needs to be pressure suits/space suits in there so when the inevitable "getting locked in there and it's leaking air" thing happens, you can put on your space suit, and be safe.

I'm looking at you STTNG and Battlestar reboot.

📆 December 22, 2023 “NASA and its contractors still face multiple challenges with development”, the #GAO found in a recent audit of the #Artemis mission. As a result, takeoff 🚀 “is unlikely to occur in 2025.” The GAO’s auditors project a launch date in early 📆 2027.
Various complications can thwart on-time air travel from one city to the next, but that’s nothing compared with moving a crew of people 238,855 miles away to an #inhumane environment.
