2024 was the year I finally started turning all of my little samples of wild clay into terra sigillata. Each of these vases was painted with different types of clay that I collected from all over the country—shades of tan, yellow, brick red and brown. These pieces express my gratitude to God, the land and the ancestors.

Four pottery vases, all intricately decorated with geometric patterns. The largest one to the left sits on its side so that the striking aqua color interior is visible. All of the vases are painted with clay earth tones.

Death Valley Abstract

This is an image of the badlands located just south of Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park.
A close-up view reveals the intricate patterns and varied colors of a geological formation. Layered sedimentary rocks create a dramatic natural tapestry with diagonal lines and contrasting hues.

Death Valley Abstract This is an image that was captured below Zabriskie Point in Death Valley National Park. This is an area of the park that has a stretch of badlands that create a maze down into the valley. The land here is layered with various colors of dirt and rock from millions of years of accumulation. The rock has been pushed up and pushed together by earthquakes over time It is this uplifting that exposes all of the various colors.

Workshop making paints with local natural pigments, by the artist Laura Josephine Snyder, at Second Street Gallery. Great fun, and most of the pigments she had gathered came from farms and hills just a few miles from home, all places we've been.

We tried egg yolk for tempura, a natural oil, and gum arabic, which I favored for watercolor paints.
