Below is a statement I prepared and read at the December 19, 2024, Board of Selectmen meeting in the Town of Easton, Connecticut. A video of the statement, and the entire meeting, will be available shortly.

“Deny Defend Depose”

I am here for all of us, even though I only have my own story.

For 22 years, I’ve been a Type One diabetic. For 22 years I’ve fought insurance companies to get the medication that I need to be here tonight alive. I am one of the lucky ones living here in EASTON with neighbors like you. But recently, I spent time in front of the pharmacy counter, explaining that if I didn’t take home insulin, I would die. Corporate interests prioritized their rebate scheme over my life

This statement was conceived on my way home today in a rush to get to insulin that would not clog my insulin pump. A new flank in a 22-year battle against for-profit healthcare.

I didn’t quite make it to Manor Lane before I had to pull over on Sport Hill Parkway to vomit from high blood sugar. Sorry to disturb you, neighbors, but the privilege of living in towns like Easton also comes with responsibilities to those that, frankly, never stood a chance of making it here.

Deny defend depose.

When marketing and advertising firms make up terms like “natural gas“ to mask the scary reality of methane so big oil can put in pipelines by our beloved Mill River and schools.

Deny defend depose.

When Donald Trump makes up lies about immigrants....

I love this so much it's probably becoming my business mantra, because it forces us to analyze 2 things:

1- the original state. The first principle of #regenerativedesign is analyzing the territory before conclusions and decisions.

2- what would be considered an improvement? What are the metrics for improvements considered in this territory? Sometimes what is better for you is not better for the ecosystem. There's just something powerful about raising these questions in a group setting

We are reframing ecosystems as infrastructure

"Living landscapes are a form of infrastructure in the sense that forests, for example, clean our water and our air."

"...It is not enough simply to restore natural systems to their former condition. “There is no ‘pure nature’ that’s outside of us, untouched up there in the foothills somewhere...We’ve ‘made’ the world what it is already, so now we need to take a very, very strong hand in the remaking. … A big part of climate adaptation may simply be unbuilding what we’ve already built.”

"A big part of climate adaptation may simply be unbuilding what we’ve already built. Rather than thinking of design as something merely additive or “beautifying,” we need to think about undoing our environmental mistakes, like damming rivers, bulkheading our shorelines, and concretizing streams. We need to start making room for rivers and floods."

"What we are trying to do is integrate many local projects into a larger-scale systemic approach, into a larger-scale resilience plan."

Yale E360Ecosystems as Infrastructure: A New Way of Looking at Climate ResilienceLandscape architect Kate Orff works on rebuilding natural systems to help communities and cities reduce their climate risks. Places with interwoven ecological systems, she says, are more resilient and better able both to respond to emergencies and adapt for the future.

A #CradleCatholic. A #LapsedCatholic? As a wee lad, I did all the stuff - Baptism, First Communion, Confirmation. I was born here all my life. When I was around four years old, the church kicked out my mom and, by extension, my family. An #ExcludedCatholic? I explored other practices and faiths, #meditation, #yoga, #Buddhism, and all the things. I wanted to not convert to a religion or practice that I had not been born to or wasn't otherwise ancestrally connected. I explored Protestant fellowships but soon began seeking "the deeper things" back in the lives of saints. This led to a deep dive into the #EarlyChurch Fathers and early #ChurchHistory. Entering the #OrthodoxChurch, I lived in several monasteries and wandered around the US like the guy in Way of a Pilgrim. I was ultimately drawn to #Theosis and the #PrayerOfTheHeart, sometimes called the #JesusPrayer. That church became tedious as well. Long story short, decades later, a pandemic, and a few ends of the world here I am. I recently stumbled across a podcast called the #PopeFrancisGeneration. I'm intrigued. I am listening. Let's see where my current studies lead.

I'll continue to post interest hashtags in this thread to be.

Instead of complaining about damage to the #environment, some people find practical #solutions and #implement them. #JoeBrewer is one such person. I'm reading his book, "The Design Pathway for Regenerating Earth", it's really fascinating. I like this guy. Each chapter has a "Further Reading" section, pointing to all kinds of other books I want to read. #earth #planet #regeneration #ecology #healing #RegenerativeDesign #waterSupply #africa #himalayas #sustainability #DesignPathway
