Moonrise Over Reeds, George Grosz, 1936

woke up with a headache and this sort of registered with me.

I like the colors, which seem to be sort of violently clashing, painful almost. There are clashing styles, also, the reeds and other plants are painted carefully, the moon is round, then there are rougher textures, splatters, scratch marks, and like bloody oversaturated pools of color, swishing strokes meandering.

Doesn't look like an easy place to be in...

I thought I'd hide a quote from the artist here that is on the artist's wikipedia page: "My Drawings expressed my despair, hate and disillusionment, I drew drunkards; puking men; men with clenched fists cursing at the moon. ... I drew a man, face filled with fright, washing blood from his hands ... I drew lonely little men fleeing madly through empty streets. I drew a cross-section of tenement house: through one window could be seen a man attacking his wife; through another, two people making love; from a third hung a suicide with body covered by swarming flies. I drew soldiers without noses; war cripples with crustacean-like steel arms; two medical soldiers putting a violent infantryman into a strait-jacket made of a horse blanket ... I drew a skeleton dressed as a recruit being examined for military duty. I also wrote poetry." — George Grosz a big orange moon over a landscape in a mostly abstract style. there seem to be clouds but they could also be noxious plumes of poison gas and smoke, there are mountain shapes and plants and a sort of blue pool of water, all of it is done in saturated brown, blood red, dark blue, with lighter color highlighting the leaves of the two prominent plants

I was rereading an old #art history, book of mine. In it are many black-and-white reproductions of #paintings and drawings that are actually in color. One caught my attention and I decided to look it up to see what it looks like in color. Amazing.

I can’t help but think that this expresses something like a Jungian archetype even though Jung’s ideas wouldn’t be developed and widely known for sometime. #ArtHistory #expressionism
