@hunterking@heads.social@heads.social don’t get me started about handhelds

The first #GBA’s screen was awful. You couldn’t see anything without direct light and needed a mini lamp accessory.

The OG #NintendoDS was a monstrosity fugly piece of hardware and the launch line up sucked,

The #3DS was pricey and didn’t sell. They had to reduce the price and give free games away.

I needed to let my brain off the hook for just one day, so yesterday I did nothing of importance! One of the non important things I did was finally reorganise the SD card for my DS Lite, with a classic DS theme for Twilight Menu, and getting the required games all loaded up!

I’m going to take a game from my collection for a spin every weekend.

I didn’t realize that Guilty Gear for the DS was some kind of #SuperSmashBros clone. It was fun to play with but it’s a bit of a game from its time: “how can we create a two screen Guilty Gear”. Most of the time I spent time complaining that the character was facing the wrong way. :cat_think:

In saying that I made to the final boss on the Arcade mode, which was absolutely BS. Like most fighting game final bosses I guess.

All and all, hard to recommend beyond being an interesting piece of history.

So, in a haze of #RetroAchievements fuelled doom scrolling, I found a little game on the hub for developer WayForward featuring a female protagonist with magical powers and mythical heritage.

I am, of course, talking about...

Hotel Transylvania for the DS!
It also came out on the 3DS!

For a movie tie-in game, making it a MetroidVania was certainly a choice, a pretty decent one, though not unexpected from the Shantae Developers.

It was a cosy and competent little romp with a kid's first MetroidVania feel to it. The game is generous in that it saves when you enter a new room, and dying puts you back at full health at the room entrance. That being said, some of the platforming can be challenging in places.

I had a lot more fun than I was expecting from this game. It's not an absolute must play, but it could have been a shovelware snooze fest. Props to WayForward on this one and for giving me a decent day's worth of platforming action!
